Books
This week I read:
The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut
I definitely need to read more Vonnegut. He’s just so funny and good.
Roleplaying Games
How Springs Island
This week the players got the basic story from the nereids Chlora and Idriel that they’d rescued, but as the nereids had been trapped for thousands of years they were totally unaware that the free nereids now were allied with the Night Axe ogres and enemies of Svarku, who has 17 captive nereids in his harem. So when the players encountered a bunch of ogres later in the session, they kept their distance. More than that, they’ve decided to go to the volcano to attend this New Moon Party that Trouble, the salamander, had invited them too.
We ended the session with them being accosted on the slopes of the volcano by a bunch of salamanders and fire imps and being made to admire the great statues of Svarku in his four aspects of warrior, saviour, poet, and wizard.
It’s the night of the new moon. I can’t wait for the players to meet Svarku and realise:
- He’s obscenely wealthy and free with his wealth to those who please with him.
- He’s both individually powerful and has an army of several hundred fire elementals.
- He has 17 of the nereids captive, which immediately pits the players against him.
Fun times ahead!
I don’t know how long this campaign will last, it feels like it’s going fairly quickly with the players about to hit upon the core conflict of the setting in only 8 sessions, so I suppose I’d better start thinking about what comes next.
Miscellaneous
I had a couple of pigeon incidents this week, with three coming into my kitchen while I got out the peanuts and proceeding to panic, and another coming in through an upstairs window. I’ve probably encouraged them a bit too much, and will have to try to establish a boundary that they can’t come indoors.
